Excerpt from: Bicycle Reference Manual for Developing Countries. Edited by Barbara Gruehl Kipke, April 1991.

Introduction

It is generally recognized that Lusaka is facing a transport problem and several alternatives are considered which could help to resolve the problem.

This study is not a feasible, study comparing alternative public transport systems. The main objective of this study is to give a description of the current transport situation affecting the poorer sections of the population of Lusaka and to provide a background for the ultimate decision process.

Part one gives a brief description of the urban pattern of Lusaka and of various aspects of transport in Lusaka including transport infrastructure, transport modes and expenditure on transport. Part Two focuses on travel-characteristics of low-income groups in Lusaka and is based on data collected in five squatter settlements in Lusaka.
