Women & Children:
Requirements & Wishes in transportation

Homepage Publications contents

  • It is important to conduct more research in order to gain a better understanding of the situation of women and children. This requires additional analysis because data has to be regarded more closely. Since the major dividing line in transportation is gender, the additional workload is justified (refer to Appendix) .
  • More credit schemes for women to purchase bicycles since women especially suffer from lack of cash due to the many demands on their budgets.
  • Ensure that bicycle rentals also offer ladies and childrens' bicycles.
  • Offer special bicycle repair courses in schools for youths.
  • Encourage production of supplementary accessories such as bicycle broaches, bicycle earrings etc. in order to convey positive messages concerning cycling.
  • More childrens' literature in which cycling is presented in a positive light.
  • Include women and female school children in an appropriate manner as part of community participation activities eg. approx. 50% men and women to be included in transportation planning commities that include user representatives.
  • Encourage more women to become transportation planners to ensure more consideration is given to gender-sensitivity.
